The Research On Relation Of Agricultural Products Trade Between ASEAN And Guangxi

China's signing the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Co-Operation Between ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and the People's Republic of China in November 2002 marked the start of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA), with agricultural products trade being one of their major cooperation items. Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GX) has a long history of doing business with ASEAN—its biggest trade partner on agricultural products trade, the volume of agricultural products keeps increasing after the establishment of CAFTA and the application of Early Harvest Programme. Due to the great shock of ASEAN to the agricultural products trade in GX which hold an important position in CAFTA, it becomes especially important to make a deep and specific empirical analysis on the relation and trend of GX-ASEAN's agricultural products trade.The paper focuses on the analysis of internal factors, such as resource endowments, economic development level, agricultural production conditions, and of the external factors as tariff or non-tariff measures.Through total characteristic analysis, trade combination index, symmetry of revealed comparative advantage index, intra-industry trade index and similitude index, the trade relations and trends between Guangxi and ASEAN are being thoroughly analyzed. The result indicates that the establishment of CAFTA has a enormous impact on the trade relations between Guxangxi and ASEAN, as the agricultural products of Guangxi no longer possess a comparative advantage, besides, its competitive advantage keeps decreasing. The upward trend of binding index of GX-ASEAN agricultural products means the high level of development, and the trade relations between the two parties will competitively step up if the existing product architecture is still used into future manufacture. While the export similitude index and the products similitude index show that the fierce competitive relation between the two parties in the world market has been weakened to some extent in recent years. Among all the ASEAN countries, the most intense competitors are Thailand and Vietnam, and the competition may still be intensified in the coming years. However, the competition with other ASEAN counties is weak with a declining tendency. But in more detailed catalogues, the competition between the two parties has a upward trend in meat products and edible vegetable, and a downward trend in animal and vegetable fats and oils, presenting the complementary characteristic.At last, in accordance with the analysis about the above problems, the paper puts forward the strategic suggestions to push the agricultural products trade between Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and ASEAN, that is to readjust the industrial structure and enhance the complementarity of trade, to improve the quality of agricultural products and regulate the construction of agricultural standardization, to nurture leading manufacturing enterprises and enhance the strength of international competitiveness. Meanwhile, pay a closer attention to expand the cooperation with the non-trade areas, and enlarge the two-way investment in agriculture between Guangxi and ASEAN to benefit more bilateral cooperation achievements.
