Research Of The Relationship Between Eutrophication And Economic Development

Taihu lake valley is located in the Yangtze river delta. It is one of the most industrialized regions whose economy is the most developed in China. The development of taihu lake valley leads the development of the eastern part of China, even the whole country. The occurrence and development of taihu lake water environment problems are related to the economic development and industrial structure adjustment. Coordinate population production, material production and environmental production is the key to realize the sustainable development of taihu lake basin. Environmental Kuznets curve is a powerful tool on the analysis of the relationship between economic growth and environmental protection and seeking the evolution of rules in between the environmental quality and economic growth. The article is going to analyse the current eutrophication status of taihu lake, and prove environmental kuznets curve hypothesis features with the indexes of eutrophication and explain the taihu eutrophication kuznets curve in different angles and levels.The article takes the Per capita GDP of Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou as economic index, the average concentration of total phosphorus, total nitrogen and chlorophyll a of taihu lake and dianshanhu lake as eutrophication index. The outcomes of regression analysis prove that the curves of the relationship between eutrophication and economic growth is likely to be N type and upside-down U type. The results also show that environmental kuznets curve is not always upside-down U type, with other types existing. In addition, the industrial structure, economic growth rate, population size and technological advancement have impacts upon the relationship between eutrophication and economic growth.Therefore, we can improve the current eutrophication status by adjusting the industrial structure, controlling economic growth rate in a reasonable level, improving population quality, and promoting environmental protection technology progress.
