Flavor is an indispensable ingredient for cigarette production, which is closely related to the establishment and development of cigarette brand, so the essence prescription is always viewed as core technology in cigarette industry.Flavor is the material which have particular aroma, including natural flavor obtained by different extraction methods and artificial flavor from chemical synthesis. Essence is composed of two or more kinds of flavors and other auxiliary materials (carrier, solvent, preservatives) according to certain technologies and formulas. Adding essence into tobacco is an important technology in cigarette industry, consequently, analysis of the chemical components of flavor may contribute to the investigation of essence formula and quality control of tobacco flavor.An key problem of the essence formula analysis is to identify one or more complex system (essential oils, extracts, tinctures, etc.) in another complex system (essence), so far, many studies show that GC-MS (gas chromatograph-mass spectrum) combined with chemometric methods has become an useful technology for analysis of essence formula. In this paper:Firstly, different pretreatment methods were applied to extract semi-volatile and volatile constituents from cigarette flavor, after that, they were separated by GC-MS Finally,"tobacco flavor chemical component analysis and computer-aided perfume software" was developed based on some chemometric methods, such as fingerprint spectrum technology, heuristic evolving latent projection resolution and "moving window orthogonal projection resolution".Secondly, some useful index for fragrance evaluation were collected, for example, aroma strong value of fragrance, quality value of fragrance, odor reservation value of fragrance and other physical/chemical constant, etc, and then revised under the guide of flavorist’s experience, then a database for fragrance quantitative description was established.Finally, in order to estimate the performance of two datasets in practical analysis of essence formulation, two unknown samples were analyzed. On one hand, unknown essence HNCD007was analyzed by "computer-aided perfume software". On the other hand, unknown essence HNCD002was analyzed by "computer-aided perfume software" combined with "the database of Fragrance descriptive value". At last, we obtained the main chemical components and notes of each essence. Results shows that this method is feasible for the analysis of complex essence formulation, it is a new approach for the study of cigarette essence and flavor.
