Polydisperse epoxy polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PolydispersePOSS-EP) was synthesized through hydrolytic condensation of industrial rawmaterial. Then POSS-EP was chemically bonded with epoxy resin(E-54) and PS toprepare a series of POSS/polymer composites. The thermodynamics and mechanicalproperties of the composites were also studied. The main investigations are asfollows:1. The structure, synthesis and application of POSS and POSS/polymercomposites were reviewed,and the thermal properties, mechanical properties weresummarized after POSS molecule was introduced into polymer matrixs.2. Low-cost Polydisperse POSS-EP was synthesized through hydrolyticcondensation of industrial raw material of3-(glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxvsilane,and its structure was well characterized by FTIR,1H NMR, GPC and XRD.3. POSS-EP was added to epoxy resin(E-54) to prepare a series ofpolydisperse-POSS/E-54composites. The properties were investigated by TGA,DSC and electronic universal testing machine, and the results demonstrated that thethermal stability and mechanical properties of polydisperse-POSS/E-54compositeswere significantly improved with the addition of POSS-EP.4. With POSS-EP as a raw material, POSS-Br initiator was obtained byring-opening reaction of BMPA(alpha-Bromoisobutyric acid) with the epoxygroups in POSS-EP. Novel POSS/PS with star-shaped structure of nano-compositeswas synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structureand composition of POSS-Br and POSS/PS composites were determined by FTIR,1H-NMR, and GPC. The thermal properties were investigated by DSC, and theresults demonstrated that POSS/PS composites exhibited higher glass transitiontemperature(Tg) compared with pristine PS. |
