With the rapid development of computer technology, computer aided design (CAD)has become an important means of all walks of life to improve production efficiency andincrease the market competition ability. People pay more and more attention to theindividuation and fitness of clothing, and make higher and higher demands on the garmentindustry along with the rapid development of economy.Clothing production moves from asingle style and mass production to small batch and multi-variety production, the traditionalmanual garment drafting and layout can not meet the growing requirements of new marketday by day. Therefore, clothing enterprises introduce the computer aided design into thegarment production field in order to adapt to the increasingly fierce market competition.The computer aided design is an advanced technology. Using clothing CAD system canreduce the labor intensity of garment workers, and improve the work efficiency. Thus,people can get rid of complex manual operations, and do more meaningful creative work.Aiming at the limitations of artificial garment layout such as big labor intensity, longcycle etc, a convenient computer aided garment drafting and layout system was developedin the Visual C++6.0development environment, combining with Open CASCADE whichis a CAD development platform. In this system, the principle of parametric design is usedto draw clothing patterns,at the same time, irregular layout is transformed into rectangularlayout problem,and an improved genetic algorithm is used to realize the automatic garmentlayout. This algorithm uses the experiences of artificial layout as a source of reference toinitial population. It mixes two kinds of crossover operators which are single-pointcrossover and rotary crossover, and five kinds of mutation operators such as single-pointnegation, rotary negation, rotary reversion etc,along with using a rapid decoding method tosave run time. After the automatic layout, the result of it can be optimized by man-machineinteractive layout such as translation, rotation, mirror image operations and so on. Inaddition, this system also provides an exchange function of multiple data file formats suchas BREP, STEP, IGES etc, so as to ensure a good interoperability with other different CADsoftwares.In this paper, according to the relevant operation steps, a test of this system whichtakes the ordinary shirts for example is done finally.The test results show that using thegarment drafting subsystem can draw clothing patterns quickly and accurately according tothe users basic size, and using the garment layout subsystem can effectively reduce layout time, meanwhile, improve the utilization rate of cloth.
