The concepts, ideas and methodology which come from the changingreality, the local experience and the dialogue of different cultures reflect onthe World Heritage Conservation System and produce new concepts, such asCultural Landscape, Cultural Routes, Discussion on Authenticity, Spirit ofLocus, and Cultural Diversity, and so on. This shows the expansion of therecognition of values in the World Heritage Conservation System from“monument” to “social complex” to “living heritage”. Historic UrbanLandscape goes on with this expansion. It is the reflection of these newcontents on the urban heritage conservation area and is built on the basis ofthe former urban heritage conservation system.Tangible elements is an important part of the composition of HistoricUrban Landscape, its meaning contains not only itself, but also implies itscohesion continuity with the intangible elements. While cohesion andcontinuity is a best entry point for us to understand historic urban landscape.Through a discourse analysis to the discussion of historic urban landscapewhich is mainly in the western context, a summary to the local experience ofurban heritage landscape conservation experience, an observation to the Asianlocal reality,context, new practice of urban heritage protection, a research onthe evolution of the world heritage conservation system and related newconcepts, and finally a meticulous reading to the international documentsrelated to the definition of historic urban landscape, this thesis seeks to graspthe essence of the expansion of the concept, and to discuss its origin andmeaning.
