For the past few years, our country suffered several disastrous earthquakes,especially the Wenchuan earthquake and the Yushu earthquake, which caused hugedamage to people. In rural areas, people do not give enough credit to the aseismicperformance of the buildings and affected by the traditional habit, they build housesmainly according to their own will and do not consider the requirements of seismicfortification, therefore the catastropic result cuased by the earthquake is more serious inthese areas. When an earthquake happened, a large part of buildings in rural areas fellapart which produced a great theat to people’s life and property.Participated "The rural community construction application technology researchand demonstration" lauched by the QingDao Bureau of science and technology, theauthor gave a deep investigation about aseimic performance of the buildings in ruralareas of ShanDong province, which included the construction materials, structure formand construction technology. Through the survey, it found that the main buildingmaterials in these regions are clay brick, stone, wooden purlin and so on, which are alleasy to obtain in these redions. It also found that the main structure forms are brick-wood structure, brick-concrete structure, concrete framework structure and a smallamount of masonry structure. And there was no design drawing when people in ruralareas built. The building was constructed in a traditional way based on people’sexperience, and given no aseimic consideration.In order to give a better understand to aseismic performance of the residential, ituses ANSYS in this paper to analyse the earthquake response of the major buildings,which employs response spectrum method and elastoplastic time-history analysismethod. The results shows: the brick-wood structure does not meet the requirement of earthquake resistance, especially the gable roof, door and window of two-floored brickstructures. It will give a modification way to current situation in this paper.Based on the analysis results and the real local condition, the author poses a spacetruss roof system which will suit the condition in rural areas. This truss system is mainlycomposed of a cross of single frame wood truss and steel, which increased the anchorpoints strenth of the roof and wall so that it improves the overall stiffness of the building,as well as the aseismic ability. At the same time the roof framework can offer a largespace, meeting people’s requirements for space. Giving the finite element analysis andtests, this truss system will provide a stable and safe performance in practical way and itis high recommended to be used in rural areas.
