The time that the freight occupied the goods sections will affect the size of the railway freight yard while layout or rebuilt freight yard, so it’s necessary to determine the time accurately and reasonably. First, this article analyzes the connections of the time that the freight occupied the goods sections with the area of the warehouse, with the length of the loading and unloading track. The longer time that the freight occupied the goods sections, the greater amount of equipment required by the freight yard. Second, the factors are mentioned in this paper, which are influencing the time that the originated freight occupied the goods sections and so does the the time that the arrived freight occupied the goods sections. As the arrived freight, the main factors including the type and the choice of the handling machine, the using of information technology and the condition of the traffic, as the originated freight, the main factors including the type and the choice of the handling machine and the ability of the yard. The time that the frieght occupied the goods sectons will be shortened by the development of handling machine, information technology, transpot and the ability of the yard. Third, two hundreds groups of o arrived packed freight extracted from Nanchong East Stations are surveyed to obtain the observed values of the parameter which denotes the time that the freight originated and freight arrived occupy the goods sections, so does the heavy freight, bulk freight and containerized freight. By analyzing the observed values, it’s shown that the maximum values of the time of each type of freight occupied the goods section locate in some interval respectively and possess the symmetrically monotonic decreasing tendency when the deviation increases by degrees, and thus we may assume that the time obey approximately the normal distribution. By means of the x2and SHAPIRO WILK test methods, we verify the distribution of the time of each type of freight respectively, and it is found that the time of the freight occupied the goods section obey the normal distribution. Comparing the the keeping time of freight reminded in the rules and regulations and the actual time that the freight occupied the goods section, we can see that the latter value is larger, and is not match the actual situation. Finally, as one design task, using the keeping time of freight reminded in the rules and regulations and the actual time that the freight occupied the goods section to calculate the parameters needed by the designing of railway freight yard, then comparing the areas of the storage yard and warehouse, the length of loading and unloading track, the number of the handling machine, the layout form of the freight yard and the investments of two yard, it is showed that the latter yard has more project, needs more investment. So, in order to provide a scientific basis for layout or rebuilt freight yard, it’s necessary to analyze the time that the freight occupied the goods section in all types of freight yard.
