The open space of urban waterfront is an important site for citizens’ daily leisure activities with itsadjacent water body and pleasing scenery. And as an area of the highest degree of biodiversity in the city,the unique crisscross transitional zone of water and land shows great ecological sensitivity as well.Along with dramatic development of city construction, environment problems like environmentpollution, traffic disordered, and land erosion were increasingly serious, which caused animal andbotany community degeneration and species reduction of urban waterfront open space and threatenedthe sustainable development of ecological system. Therefore, exploring strategies or methods of designand planning, based on restoration ecology and landscape ecology in theory, to restore and rebuild urbanwaterfront open space, at the same time ensure structure and function completeness of eco-system isincreasingly urgent for sustainable development of urban waterfront open space and even urbanecological construction.This article based on eco-restore as a fundamental, according to related research theory, and thesurvey of the waterfront open space in Hangzhou, raised design and planning strategies and methods ofrestoring and rebuilding urban waterfront open space from the band structure between land and water,the communities of flora and fauna, and the flowing pattern of energy and materials.The main contents and results are as follows:(1) Study of the ecosystem structure and evolutionary mechanisms of the urban waterfront openspace in depth.(2)Analyzed and summarized the ecological problems and reasons for the waterfront open space inHangzhou.(3) According to the investigation, proposed the community scale as the basic unit and the suitablespecies to do the restoration and reconstruction of flora and fauna, and the planning strategy from anecological perspective.(4)Planning and design of the terrestrial plants, terrestrial animals, aquatic plants and animals, andthe birds recreational viewing spaces based on the healthy of Flora and fauna communities.
