With the rapid development of traffic and the advancement of technology, the detectionof bridge is considered to be more and more important. The major concern of bridgeassessment includes how to rate load—carrying capacity and safety of existing bridges, howto correctly assess the structural damage, how to rationally strengthen and maintain bridges, and how to improve the reliability of bridges. Undoubtedly, load test is one of the mostimportant testing methods, which can provide advantageous and direct bases foradministrators to evaluate carrying capacity of bridge. Especially for the new structure, it canprovide bridge design theory and working techniques with valid actual data. Based onXiahengli Bridge, this thesis attempts to present several aspects as follows:1. Introduce the research development for bridge assessment and strengthening in Chinaand other countries all over the world.2. The theory of assessment and strengthening are concluded based on the introduction, and the future of research for bridge assessment and strengthening is present.3. The detection methods of the bridge are introduced, including general detection anddetailed load testing.4. Static and dynamic tests are carried out on Xiahengli Bridge, and then its strength anddynamic characteristics are analyzed and evaluated.5. By taking Xiahengli Bridge as an example, a comprehensive inspection and damageanalysis are conducted. The strategies of maintenance and strengthening are proposed for thisbridge, which can be taken as valuable suggestions for similar types of bridge.6.Summarize the experience in working process briefly, and according to the problemsencountered, make outlook in the future.
