As the rapid development of the technology of excavator production and the increasingly fierce competition of market, the traditional mode of production such as few varieties and large quantities have been unable to meet the individual needs of users. Manufacturers are called for the ability of responding to the users demand quickly and taking the market with higher cost products in short time. On this background, product development for excavator, which is guided by the modular design methodology, is put forward. According to the design status quo of excavator, study of key technology on modular design of excavator will be carried out. The aim is to realize the speedy design of product, and to solve the contradiction between mass production and the individual needs. This study is looked excavator as the research object in this article and is guided by the modular design theory, with module division, module code and module interface technology which applied to the Product Lifecycle Management system as its key technology. Product development is designed and developed according to the product configuration technology.Take depth research in the technology of module partition to the excavator product. According to the features of modular design, consideration of reuse and the actual of the products whole life cycle, and according to the independence, integrity, common and typical principles in partition of function module, from the angle of product lifecycle module dividing, decompose the total product function, and evaluation its reasonable, divided into optimal function module. According to the mapping between function-structure principle and the relevant factors on product design, formed a" function" partition method as main character of the excavator products structure module, divides the module of the product structure.Module code, module interface technology and modular design system application and effectiveness also be researched. On the division of structural module, in the sole of concise, applicable and the principle of expandability as also as coding of method modules for the detailed coding; Analysis of the excavator product module interface function, interface classification and interface geometry, stating the standardization and serialization of different interface. On the basis of the above-mentioned key technologies and combined with the PLM system, the establishment of the product whole life cycle unified data model, modular product configuration database, the method of product configuration management and the modular design achievements are stated.The modular design concept is applied on the excavator product. As a result, the repetition of design is reduced, the utilization ratio of design resource is enhanced. And it will promote the rapid development of the excavator product. The modular design system, which is characterized by integrated, automated and networked, will greatly promote the speed and quality of modular design, and shorten the delivery cycle, and meet the personalized demand of customer.
