Seismic performance evaluation of structures should be conducted considering post-elastic behavior since structures are expected to deform inelastically when subjected to severe earthquakes. Nonlinear analysis procedures which consider post-elastic behavior provide better information that cannot be determined directly by an elastic analysis. The nonlinear static analysis (Pushover Analysis) gives better understanding and more accurate seismic evaluation of buildings as the progression of damage and failure can be traced.Pushover analysis is used to evaluate the expected performance of a structural system by estimating its strength and deformation demands in design earthquakes by means of a static inelastic analysis, and comparing these demands to available capacities at the performance levels of interest. The evaluation is based on an assessment of important performance parameters, including global drift; inter story drift, inelastic element deformation, deformation between elements, and element connection. Pushover curve transformed to capacity spectrum and superimposed to demand spectrum to get the performance point. Pushover analysis also shows the performance level of the building components and maximum base shear carrying capacity of the structure. This research focuses on the seismic performance evaluation of a high-rise building with short-leg shear wall structure. A nonlinear static pushover analysis procedure using the displacement coefficient method, as described in FEMA356, was used to evaluate the seismic performance of the existing building called Jiang Hua Complex which is placed in Wuhan city, Hubei province, P.R. China. Pushover analysis outputs allow tracing the sequence of yielding and failure, show the structural level and overall capacity of the building. SAP2000VI4, general purpose three-dimensional structural analysis program, is used as a tool for performing the pushover analysis. The research provides deep insight to the performance evaluation procedure and structural behavior of the building under with short leg shear wall structural system under design seismic demand. Finally the researches come up with the following remarks and suggestions(l)The modal data of the building shows the structural plan layout of the building meet the requirement specified in the national building code and has good torsional resistance.(2) The total lateral drift and interstory drift analysis output and the seismic check for deformation shows the building has uniform vertical stiffness distribution.(3)Pushover analysis is performed in both principal directions. The analysis result shows that the building has more stiffness and ductility in the y-direction as compared to x-direction(4) Plastic hinges are formed in the coupled beam at different performance level. This location exposes the design weakness that may remain hidden in the elastic analysis. So those members need strengthening to achieve the specified performance level of the building. (5)Residential building installed by short-leg shear wall structural system give more space for architectural design and shows a better lateral resisting capability for seismic action.
