The eastern coastal area of China is widely covered with a deep softclay layer of high water content, low strength, large compression, andsmall permeability. Loads, especially dynamic loads, will causedfoundation settlement. The expansion project of Wenzhou airport isconducted on a deep soft clay foundation. Therefore, settlement is a maincriteria for project quality control. Aircraft loads are quitely differentfrom normal traffic loads mainly in:(1) aircraft loads are much largerthan the normal traffic loads;(2) dynamic loads induced from aircraftlanding are decaying and the waveform is more complicated than that ofnormal traffic loads. As a precondition for settlement, it is necessary tostudy the dynamic characteristics of soft clay under aircraft loads.Based on the properties of the soft clay foundation at WenzhouAirport, a dynamic triaxial test was designed to study the dynamiccharacteristics of soft clay under aircraft loads. A strain accumulation model was established for simulating soft clay under aircraft loads.Numerical results of settlement accumulation were compared with thefield measurements and some useful conclusions were made.A foundation treatment method for the expansion project ofWenzhou airport was proposed and the feasibility was discussed. Byanalyzing on-site monitoring data, the real time control and optimizationof foundation settlement was achieved.
