In traditional vehicle dynamics research, it is need repeated trial and test toevaluate the suspension characteristics and vehicle handling stability, which is notonly cost a lot, the design cycle long, but also many tests are can not be performedfor security problems. With the emergence of the virtual prototype technology, it iseasier to do the vehicle handling stability tests. It uses software to build thevehicle’s3d model, analyze and evaluate its performance. Some poor performancecan be improved in the designing phase, so save the money and shorten the designcycle.This article takes a light commercial vehicle as the prototype, using themodern multi-body dynamics analysis software ADAMS/CAR build frontsuspension, rear suspension, steering system, body, power-train assembly and tires.Firstly assemble the front suspension, steering system and test rig to do the parallelwheel travel test and static loads test. By the index parameters of analysis, evaluatethe suspension K&C characteristics. It is found that the toe angle is not satisfied, souse the professional module Insight of ADAMS software to do the sensitivityanalysis. And based on the test result, select coordinates which influent the toeangle very seriously to optimize. According to the optimization results, correct thesuspension. Then comparing the optimal results and experimental results, it isfound that the optimization is ideal, so the suspension model is compact the designrequirements. Then assemble the all subsystems to the vehicle model. According toGB6323-1994《Standard for the Vehicle Handling Stability》, do some tests likereturnability test simulation,steering wheel angle step input simulation,steadystatic circular test simulation, and steering efforts test procedure simulation, thenget the results. According to QC/T480-1999《Standard for the Vehicle HandlingStability Index Limit and Evaluation Method》, get the score of the tests. Finallydraw the vehicle handling stability test’s total score, and the result shows thevehicle handling stability is good.
