At present, there are numerous field devices in the hydropower station computer monitoringsystem. The communication protocols and interfaces of different devices are not exactly thesame. At the same time, the number of the protocols and interfaces which host computersupported is limited. Therefore a device that can coordinate both host computer and slave deviceis needed. The communication manager can be used to deal with these problems.First of all, the research and application status of communication manager is discussed inthis paper. And the significance of the communication manager is investigated. The hydropowerstation computer monitoring system and RS485are introduced. Through the analysis andcomparison of three kinds of design schemes, the communication manager design scheme basedon microcontroller is chosen according to the actual needs. Then, the implementation of thehardware and software of the RS485communication manager is studied in this subject centeredon ST’s STM32F4series32-bit microcontroller. The whole project of the communicationmanager is analyzed for its characteristic. The hardware circuit including MCU master controlunit circuit, communication unit circuit, memory circuit unit and debug circuit unit is completed.And the prototype is designed. Module idea is adopted to complete the design of software partbased on the functions that the system needed to achieve. The host computer issues orders to thecommunication manager via RS485communication. The communication manager receives thedata and transmits the processed data to corresponding field device. The communicationmanager receives the data send from the field devices and processes it accordingly. Thencommunication manager transmits it to host computer.The design and debugging of the hardware platform and the software code of thecommunication manager have been completed. The online debugging of the prototype is done.This design has been proved feasible through experiments. And the improved scheme of richinterface types is put forward.
