As the city develops, underground commercial public space in cities has becomean indispensable part in everyone’ life, it is an important place for people to goshopping, associating and entertainment. It is not only the reflection of the culture ofthe city, but also affects the people’s quality of life. In the context of the urbanizationin our country processing continually, the research and practice of undergroundcommercial public space has been attracting wide concern.It’s has been only more than twenty years since the emerge of undergroundcommercial public space in our country, and for the reason of the insufficient of theoryand experience, people has been putting too much attention on the material aspect andignoring the mental meaning of the underground commercial public space. However,the spirit of place is an inner factor that affects the development of undergroundcommercial public space. The modeling of spirit of underground commercial publicspace could make people feel its unique atmosphere and culture, and come up withidentification of it, and only then could underground commercial public space beengaged deeply in people’s daily life and full of energy and vitality continually. Basedon the genius loci theory and after collecting and studying related monographs anddatum and investigating some cases, this thesis elaborates the affects on the spirit ofplace of underground commercial public space of the four elements, which arecommercial structure, all kinds of substance factors, the regional culture and socialactivities. Energetic underground commercial public space in cities are the substancecarrier of people’s daily activities such as shopping and entertainment, and peoplecould feel the pleasure of life and have the sense of belonging. It is the wideparticipation of people that make underground commercial public space a “place”, andform its spirit of place. To follow the principle of linking theory with practice, thisthesis chooses the shopping mall of the Zhongguancun plaza as an example and doeslots of research about it to analysis the factors of its spirit of place, and come up with several key points in the modeling of the spirit of underground commercial publicspace in cities, which are reasonable commercial structure, harmonious environment,the exploring and delivering of the regional culture, abundant social activities,humanist public service facilities and management, after that it proposes someforecasts, hoping that it could be helpful to the design and research of undergroundcommercial public space in cities in the future.
