As road network skeleton, arterial highway bears the majority of traffic, which is crucialto guarantee the road network running efficient, fast and accurate. In the regional context,arterial highways is built in different time, guide sign system is designed referring differentversions of the standard, and the newly constructing road consider inadequately propercoordination with the existing road guide sign system. In addition, with rapid construction ofarterial highways in recent years, the existing road guide sign system restricted the efficientoperation of the arterial highways in certain situation. So it is necessary to carry out researchon setting of the arterial highway sign system, for complex network of special environment ofregional arterial highway network in order to guarantee traffic safety operation, highefficiency and harmony.Based on this background, this paper firstly analyses the symbol information needs,layout set requirements, the driving people path-finding cognitive psychology as well as theguide sign system setting application situation and current codes, standards and relevantdocuments adaptability of the arterial highway area. According to arterial highway organiccomponent, the paper probes into arterial highway sign system setting of freeway, generalcommunication interchange, communication hub interchange, national highway(provincialhighway)and national highway(provincial highway) plane cross, national highway(provincialhighway)and county road(township road)plane cross, national highway(provincialhighway)and village road plane cross particularly, then proposes the layout design and settingscheme in the different conditions; put forward setting method and board for the sign in theservice area (no-parking area) as well as sign setting method at the end of entrance ramp andexport ramp according to driving safety; classify tourist attractions, and give the differenttypes of tourist attractions mark page design scheme according to the different tourismresources and combining tourism of different traffic demand. Finally, based on above researchand relying on the engineering practice in Shaanxi province, the paper gives seven settingscase of guide sign system of freeway entrance, general communication interchange,communication hub interchange, different grade road plane cross and service area (no-parkingarea), which improving the design level of arterial highway guide sign system’s design andapplication level in a certain extent.
