With the increasing of the arterial highway mileage and the improvement of highway grade, there are more and more emerging traffic problems. Arterial highway traffic is a hot issue concerned by the whole society. The transport system is a dynamic system which is composed of three major factors, driver, vehicle and road. As the road user and vehicle controller, driver is the heart of the system. Driver is the primary factor that influences traffic accidents in the communications system. Moreover, the most important approach to obtain traffic information is via vision channel. For this reason, studying the design of the two types of traffic signs based on driver's dynamic visual search mode is essential. Accordingly, the traffic operating environment will be improved.Based on physical and psychological theories of driver's dynamic vision, combining related research methods and conclusions domestic and abroad, the visual search modes and characteristic parameters of driver's visual behavior are discussed systemically. Several indexes are determined as basic characteristic parameters of dynamic visual search mode, including location of fixations, fixation duration, sequence of fixations, number of fixations and visual cognition.Driver's dynamic visual search mode field tests are performed in real arterial highway traffic environment. By recording the driver's eye movement of recognizing two types of signs behavior with the eye tracking system, this paper analyzed the driver's fixation behavior. The eye movement data are explored by analysis of variance. This paper analyzed the impact of driver's fixation behavior with different speeds. By allowing the driver to recognize the information of signs at different positions, the visual cognition sequences are determined in this paper. By regression analysis of these parameters, the relationship between information quantity and visual cognition of traffic guide sign are obtained. Finally, the rational number of road names on guide signs are determined this paper. The results are applied to the arterial highway. The impact mechanism of traffic signs on the people, vehicle and road are studied in this paper based on the characteristic of arterial highway. The arterial highway leading distance design are calculated based on the modeling of effective view field about the diver's visual and the vehicle driving model, are presented in this paper. According to different road grade and different information, the setting angle of traffic signs are calculated in this paper. Finally, this paper made a case study on arterial highway is illustrated with the above achievement. This case study proves that theory and methods presented in this paper is feasible.
