| Taken social space theory as clue, surveyed field sites in Hangzhou west urban fringe, combined with data-analysis from questionnaire and qualitative research methods, this paper tries to explore the development characteristics of fringe area, as well as the main groups’ spatial practice in housing, employment and consumption, and examine process of social-space.Study found that Xihu District urban fringe have a large migrant population who live in villages and towns; the constitution of residents is complex; land use has dual characteristic, industrial leading and major projects driven, massive and engineering; urban fringe lack of public facilities, and infrastructure quality is uneven. Mixed social groups and complex spatial characteristics formed a two-way interaction. Local residents open new room around their own houses with two mental states:short-term economic income on rent and long-term income on the land resettlement compensation. This behavior lead to space conflict in the future which now hide behind the daily life. Two phenomena show the unordered space:foreign residents produce the space of informal employment for living and commuting trip induced traffic jams. Larger-scale, better service and quality requirements reflect local residents own space rights. In the process of consumption, local residents receive city health and non-health culture invasion. Foreign residents show space consumption habits of small range, low frequency and minimization. The lack of the collective consciousness, the impact of modernity, and the lack of city planning and policy are the main factors that influence the healthy development of social space in urban fringe. This research describes the characteristic of urban fringe which come from material and society, builds the abstract models of social-spatial interaction. It makes up the shortage of sociality research in urban fringe space, helps to understand the conflict and logic in the process of space evolution in large cities in China. |
