With our rapid economic development, accelerating urbanization and the rapid rise of motorvehicle ownership, existing roads hardware facilities have failed to meet the demand of swellingtraffic. Traffic congestion, frequent accidents and serious environmental pollution have becomeincreasingly serious problems. It isn’t a good and effective way to solve them by limiting demand,increasing supply and expanding the scale of the road. The best strategy to ensure the sustainabledevelopment of the urban traffic is adopting modern technology to transform the existingtransportation system and grasp the real-time traffic conditions. It can be called ITS (IntelligentTransportation Systems).The key of intelligent transportation systems is to get comprehensive, real-time, accurate anddynamic traffic information. This paper firstly introduces the main content and networkarchitecture of the intelligent transportation system, and several key technologies of trafficinformation. Then it mainly aims at the problems of fully perceiving real-time traffic information,achieving vehicle to vehicle communications and automatic unique identification. The paperproposes an entirely new transportation system based on the GID (Global ID or Gene ID) to attainthe real-time, reliable and dynamic traffic information in an economic way. Intelligenttransportation system based on the GID does not need any roadside facilities. It can perceive thevehicle speed information and other static and dynamic information initiatively by installing theGID vehicle terminal. Then based on their perception of accurate vehicle speed information, and afull range of positioning technology, the system can realize urban real-time traffic. The finalevaluation results of real-time traffic based on the real data demonstrate that the vehicle-road loadbalancing is increased by81.99%. And the vehicle average speed is increased by111.08%thanbefore, the saving of travel time is about50%, the reduction in fuel consumption is about30.5%.
