| Courtyard is a traditional architectural style, playing a very important role in the history of garden architecture. Having resulted from the interaction between man and nature, courtyard, like other architectural spatial forms, with time passing on, has developed into various forms. By analyzing the designs of the ancient courtyards as well as the designs of contemporary residence courtyard, this thesis tries to probe into people’s desires and requirements for courtyard. The core of this thesis consists of four parts:(1) the close relationship between man and nature;(2) the road of transcendence;(3) the feature of drawing inferences about other cases from one instance;(4) questioning in the visual threshold of modernity. Through statements from the four perspectives, it has effectively revealed the forms and laws in which the courtyard landscape of the contemporary residence is designed under the influence of modern lifestyle, which contributes to the exploration of the courtyard design of the contemporary residence.The second part, definitions of some concepts, first elaborates concepts of the lifestyle, the modem lifestyle as well as courtyard and then deals with the relationship between modern lifestyle and the landscape of residential courtyard.The third part, the close relationship between man and nature-an analysis of the forms of traditional courtyard landscape, mainly focuses on the elementsã€cultural backgrounds and the function of traditional courtyard landscape in an attempt to explore the value and cultural connotation embodied in the traditional courtyard landscape.The fourth part, the road of transcendence--an analysis of the forms and derivation of the landscape of urban residential courtyard, attempts to review the elementsã€features as well as the development of modern courtyard landscape. In this part, the reasons for the development and derivation of modern courtyard landscape are mainly discussed. Based on the above demonstration, it is concluded that the modern lifestyle, the traditional view about landscape, the improvement of aesthetic ideas and the development of scientific technology all account for people’s increasing higher standards for modern courtyard landscapeThe fifth part, the feature of drawing inferences about other cases from one instance-forms and features of courtyard landscape of urban residence, introduces to readers the forms and features of courtyard landscape of urban residence by way of examples, including comparison between traditional courtyard landscape of ancient times and that of modern times. Based on the comparison, the ways and laws in which the urban courtyard is designed are stated. The sixth part, questioning in the visual threshold of modernity-criticism and reflections on the design of modern residential courtyard, shows appreciation for some successful cases and offers some analysis on less-successful ones, and at the same time, blocks out some ideas for the future trend.To sum up, the thesis concerned comes to the conclusion that the courtyard design of contemporary urban residence not only results from the design of the ancient times but is also a product under the influence of modern lifestyle. |
