Traffic congestion is one of the most important problems in most cities, it does harm tothe sustainable development and decreases the quality of people’s life. It’s significant toidentify the traffic situations quickly and accurately. As the progress of vehicular networks,there is another efficient way to realize the function, which is present in this paper. Based onthe vehicular network, this paper introduces the methods on collecting GPS data in real timeuse them to get the traffic situations in different roads.This paper gives a view of the GPS traffic information collection system and analyzesthe principles that used in the system. The main content of this paper are how to collect theGPS data via vehicular networks, how the terminal progress the data, and how to use the datato identify the traffic situations.After the GPS data collection, the control system will process the dynamic data,including detecting the lost data, restoring the error data, filtering the data, matching the datawith digital maps. To divide the road into sections more properly, this paper presents a newmethod that based on historical traffic data. In identifying the traffic state, this paper providesa new method that is different from the floating cars system, the fuzzy comprehensiveevaluation model that based on vehicular networks. The model is descripted in details. It’s fitto judge the traffic state because of the fuzzy features of traffic flow. The measures which arecalculated independently by each car, including the road average speed and variationcoefficient of speed, are used as the evaluation factors. And the result is provided by the fuzzymodel.The proposed model is verified by using GPS equipped cars to collect real trafficinformation. The traffic information shows that the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model isa quick and accurate way to identify the road traffic state.
