Pavement preservation was defined as the systematic application of activities whichprovide and maintain excellent roadways, extend pavement life. Pavement preservationincludes routine maintenance, preventative maintenance and minor rehabilitation. Pavementpreventive maintenance treatments were widely used in domestic, such as fog seal (includinga variety of spray emulsion) and micro-surfacing. These two treatments have their ownadvantages and inherent defects. If integrating all advantages, to develop a multi-functionalultra-thin bonded preservation layer which is waterproof, improved skid resistance andreduced rolling noise; and highly cost-effective, ultra-thin thickness, long durability,convenient construction technique as well. This layer would be supposed to be alternative tothe two treatments above, and be able to as a new preventive preservation treatment.The emphasis of this study was put on the selection of raw materials, gradationcomposition, and mix formula and construction technology of the multi-functional ultra-thinbonded preservation layer asphalt mixture.Firstly, based on the pavement performance of the multi-functional ultra-thin bondedpreservation layer and the related researchs, the selection of raw materials and requirementsof the multi-functional ultra-thin bonded preservation layer was analyzed. Choosing specialmodified emulsion asphalt as bonding layer can prevent surface water infiltering the structurelayer in various ways, and then avoid the deterioration caused by water.Secondly, in order to choose the optimal gradation using the Marshall mix design, fivekinds of mix formulas of the multi-functional ultra-thin bonded preservation layer should bedesigned and their pavement performance was also verified through relevant experiments.Experiments shown that the asphalt mixture of the multi-functional ultra-thin bondedpreservation layer had good high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance andreducede deterioration caused by water. Then the job mix formula was recommended.Finally, the multi-functional ultra-thin bonded preservation layer has been paved on theselected test section and the construction process was discussed. The test of pavementperformance indicated that the multi-functional ultra-thin bonded preservation layer with good waterproof noise reduction and improved skid resistance performance.
