Design Strategy Of Child-friendly Urban Public Space

Urban public space is one of the places that children contact most frequentlywhen they playing outdoor. Happy and healthy outdoor activities play an importantrole in children’s daily life. How can we give our children a warm park instead of coldconcrete? Based on the characteristics of children activities, and the links betweeneach feature of urban public space, combined with the study of mental and behavioralpatterns of children, this paper put forward a space design strategy for children“playing at ease”, and apply the strategy to the design of residential areas, streets,squares, parks and other typical regions of space, in order to create a child-friendlyspace. The paper deployed the research with four sections.The first chapter: Introduction. Explaining the reason why this paper turn over tothink the status of child activity space in urban public space, and definitude theproblem, subject of research and related concepts, significance and methods ofresearch.The second chapter: Analysis related concepts and theories. Start from Children’sperception of the environment, then analyzes the characteristics and classification ofchildren’s activities in urban space, summarizes the types of children activities inpublic space.The third chapter: Analysis of children’s behavior and activities. Based on theinterpretation of the content of contemporary urban public space, combined with theproblems of children activity space, provide a theoretical basis for further study andthe analysis direction.The fourth chapter: Application of research strategies in related areas. From thelayout and control level, and space function, put forward design strategiesrespectively. Analyses the characteristics of children’s activity in residential areas,streets, squares, parks and related aspects. Exemplify specific methods to creatingchild-friendly space in above areas.To sum up, based on the deep analysis of status and the research of the theory ofchildren’s psychology and relevant urban planning theory, this paper put forward thestrategy of child-friendly urban public space design system and provide practicaladvice for creating child-friendly city.
