Substation communication network connects the various substation IEDs(intelligent electronic devices, IEDs), which is the substation automation system’s lifeblood, and the system’s availability is decided by its real-time performance and information security. So research of Substation communication system considering real-time and information security is of great importance in terms of theory and engineering.It analyses the substation automation system real-time and information security from two different points of view respectively.First, it analyses the communication network, topology and data classification within IEC61850based on digital substation automation system framework. Specifically, it classifies the involved data of communication system in the respects of real-time and security.Based on D-S theory a new evaluation method is proposed for information security assessment of substation communication system. It calculates the joint weight for individual security threat via scale method. Then, the experts’assessments are quantified and merged according to D-S theory. Finally it ranks the influence of individual threat to the information security of substation communication system by judging the confidence interval which can quantify the threat clearly and will provide theoretical support to the drafting of the information security strategy for the substations.Information security of substation automation system is analysed from two different points of view. The effects of VLAN(Virtual Local Area Network) technology and TLS(Transport Layer Security) on information security and real-time performance are analysed. VLAN technology logically divides the relevant IEDs into a virtual local area network; it can greatly reduce the data traffic, which can solve the substation communication system both in real-time and information security. OPNET simulation results of the VLAN technology prove that it can solve the substation communication system both in real-time and information security.
