The application and development of substation automation system is extremelyimportant for power system in running safely and economically. However, there are stillsome problems existing in SAS, for example the secondary connection is complex, theautomation function is independent or overlapping, the use of information is inefficient, andintegrated application and interoperability are lacking, With the increased complexity of thegrid structure, grid capacity continues to expand, the amount of real-time message increases, causing higher requirements for the communication network of scheduling automationsystems and plant and substation automation system, which are due to the lack of thesubstation overall digitalization and informatization in SAS.The appearing of EVT、 ECT and ISG made it possible to construct DSAS. And thereliable, high-speed and open communication network and communication system standard toachieve protection of digital substation is the guarantee of DSAS. Therefore, IEC61850provides the overall construction standard for power system’s informatization and DSAS.Therefore, based on the standard IEC61850substation communication structure, it hastheoretical and practical double meaning to make researches on substation communicationnetwork real-time and reliability. This paper first introduces the background, development, researches and applications ofthe standard and emphasizes on the main content and core technology of IEC61850. Then itsummarizes the basic communication structure of DSAS and the performance requirementsfor Ethernet. It describes two basic networking modes and relevant features and disadvantages.Thirdly, the paper makes the quantitative analysis of the composition of the Ethernet packettransmission end-to-end delay. According to the results, corresponding measures forimprovement are given. Then in this paper, taking a real D2substation as an example, afternode modeling and network modeling, the substation OPNET simulation model is established.Considering the bandwidth, the background of the CPU utilization, the size of control packetsand sending time interval, several comparative simulation experiments are conducted. Finallytaking an example of utilizing partial research results in practical project, the paper introducesthe overall design of the system platform, the modeling and performance indicators and otherkey technologies, and shows various types of data.
