As an infrastructure of the whole society, the power system trends to be more highly automation and information with the rapid development of information technology. However, Over the past few years, lots of attack events take place on the subsystem information security of the power system all over the world, both the economic lost and the calamitous consequence are unbearable. There is an urgent demand of security research on the power information system.This paper chooses the substation which is used to transfer and convert electrical power as the research subject, and the network simulation technology is chosen to study the security problem. As one of the most important part of the power system, the substation is worthy studying since its real time work status can affect the security and the stability of the whole power system. The communication of the substation automation system has strict requirement for the real time performance of the message, IEC61850which is the only international standard on substation communication network and system has a clear requirement on it. The problem is that this standard mentions nothing about the security. Based on the analysis of the possible factors which will affect the real time performance of the substation communication, an encryption method is proposed which based of DES and RSA mixed to improve the security of the substation communication. This solution can largely ensure the security of the communication message, under the prerequisite of the real time performance requirement of the communication message by the IEC61850is to be met. At the same time, the effective affects to the real-time performance will be researched by the simulation on the substation communication with OPNET, also, comparison of the typical and the complex substation will show the reliability of this solution.In addition, the classic APH is used to analysis the possible threats of the substation message layer by layer, and the original data will be analyzed by the gray evaluation algorithm. The risk level of all the threats and the whole substation automation system will be effectively given.
