The continuing population growth and economic pressures on the environment, natural resources, the research especially on land use change become a more and more serious public concern. Henan and Jiangsu Province are selected as the typical provincial cases in east and central China to conduct the comparative study of land use change and water resources for the national or regional better environmental and economical policy making activities.Different administrative levels of cities in the two provinces are chosen as case areas designed to study the two changing characteristics of different land use types among which seven kinds of land use types are defined including water as the basis of natural resources and the environment closely related to the mankind of which the quantity and quality is also part of the comprehensive national strength. This study is worked out on the basis of land use change using diversity theory and map comparative concept. The main contents are as follows:First, the study areas are selected after the related data preparation and processing through the establishment of a geographic database including current land use digital maps of each study area as well as the sum area of each land use type.On the basis of selection of the study areas, the typical case areas from the east and the central China are comparatively studied. The research results show that the cultivated area of all the case areas were reduced while those from the eastern part relatively higher than the central. Meanwhile, with the economic development, the urban comprehensive dynamic degree difference between the higher administrative level cities gradually decreases, for example, the gap of comprehensive land use dynamic degree between Zhengzhou and Nanjing became from-26.53%of study period1-2to+4.35%of the study period2-3. On the contrary, the gap between lower administrative level smaller cities or counties in a short period of time significantly increased, for instance, the land use dynamic degree between Yuanyang and Rugao became from-39.62%the study period1-2to-423.13%of the study period2-3. It may infer that possible degree of economic development and local as well as potential for development-related could be the main reasons or that the area of land use change not only to the economic development of the region, but also by many other factors, such as government policy, in which the natural environment.Water is selected as a single object for the application of diversity theory for its spatial distribution. The results show that the diversity theory can be applied to the study of the spatial distribution of water, and information about the spatial distribution of water get be analysed via this new way. But it should be noted that when the larger study area, such as the capital cities and major cities in the study, more moderate grid size would be better such as2×2km2,4×4km2; No obvious law can be found when the study area is set small and scattered, for example, Rugao, distribution of water space diversity index, the reason may be due to a smaller study area, the size of the grid in this study a certain range, accuracy needs to be further research. On the basis of diversity of water-based grid, this study further attempts to use application for the map similarity to solve the whole relationship between the related parts. The research results show that the map comparison in the water of the spatial distribution of the effects is obvious. However, due to the limitation of the original data (such as the lack of high resolution administrative map of the study areas), resulting in the low expression of the map. But compared with the traditional conventional means of detection, this method may better display in a map style the spatial distribution of the water body change process so that changes in the entire process can be performed significantly.
