With the rapid development of geographical information science and technology, to satisfy the growing demands of electronic nautical charts, the higher requirements of hydrographic data standards was put forward. Since "Digital Hydrographic Data Transfer Standard"(referred to as S-57) issued by IHO in the1990s could not meet the current, the next-generation standard S-100came into being after years of discussion, and it indicates the arrival of promoting the new research and products for ECDIS industry.S-100is compatible with ISO TC/21119100Geographic information system standards, especially in the process of data management, processing, transmission, hence it could ensured that the S-100is competent with the development of the geographic information industry. Because the S-100is a timely and flexibility standard, it will make the hydrographic data to be the essential part of future maritime geographic information system, eventually it will replace the S-57standard. Now E-Navigation MSC has listed S-100as the default standard for information and data modeling and data transmission standard in E-Navigation strategy, thus the studies on S-100have received more and more interest from all over the world. But in China, the researches were lack of the essential contents of the data modeling mechanism, the theoretical model and the data encoding format. Therefore, through the analysis of the characteristics of S-100standard, a feature catalogue UML model was successfully constructed in this paper. At last, the feature type records which are related with feature catalogue were also discussed in accordance with the ISO/IEC8211.The main works are summarized as follows:1. The research background of S-100standard was described in the first part of the thesis.2. Then the conceptual schema of data model, including data types, UML static structure diagram was analyzed. Furthermore, the core element, feature concept dictionary register, was discussed with emphasis.3. The information elements and the links between them in the feature catalogue was analyzed in this part. Also a feature catalogue model was successfully created based on the Rational Rose. The tide prediction feature catalogue as a example, was put into perspective of the whole process of how to create a tide prediction feature catalogue model.4. In accordance with the ISO/IEC8211, the encoding rules of S-100feature type records and their description fields were analyzed in this part. As a concrete example, a property encoding of light beacon feature was put forward.
