Seabuckthorn (SBT), which has the capability to prevent soil erosion, has been planted extensively all over the world. Its leaf has been more plentiful and demonstrated to have antioxidant activity as well as various other functions. Accordingly, SBT leaf has been made into tea. In order to identify the characteristic nutrients in SBT tea, SBT and green tea formulations were compared. The results of tea powder analyses showed that the levels of a number of nutrients were higher (p<0.01) in SBT tea compared to green tea, namely, total fat (6.70±0.32versus3.68±0.16%),vitamin E (77.16±0.04versus63.72±0.04mg/100g), carotenoid (10.67±0.61versus7.50±0.60mg/100g), vitamin B6(1.49±0.02versus0.17±0.04mg/100g), dietary fiber (12.97±0.38versus9.89±0.36mg/100g) and calcium (1.05±0.08versus0.74±0.03%). In contrast, the following nutrients were lower (p<0.01) in SBT tea than green tea:crude protein (21.51±0.25versus24.64±0.25%), soluble sugar (5.58±0.11versus7.40±0.44%), caffeine (17.95±0.03versus3436.70±0.04mg/100g), zinc (14.41±1.11versus51.60±3.21mg/kg), copper (7.72±1.05versus44.83±2.78mg/kg), manganese (215.74±19.11versus1404.29±20.99mg/kg), flavonoid (1.52±0.59versus3.19±0.15%) and phenolics (3.15±0.08versus4.75±0.05%).Abundant dietary fiber and vitaminB6, trace caffeine, and some total flavonoid and phenolics were the characteristic nutrients found in SBT tea. Moreover, too much caffeine and manganese were detected in green tea. Therefore, SBT leaf tea, which contains many healthy components and fewer harmful ingredients, is worthy of further research and development.
