Rhizoma atractylodis macrocephalae is gained from rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephalaKoidz.(AMK), contains lactones, glucides, ketones and amino acids, has been applied in treatment ofmany diseases, such as inflammation, tumour, diabetes and consenescence. In order to exploit thisresource in China with quality assessment and quality control, the following studies were carried out:1. The investigation on the environment factors of regions of AMK showed that different habitats hadsome common grounds. For example, all of habitats excepted Baicaoyuan enjoyed subtropical monsoonclimate featuring abundant precipitation, full sunshine, four distinct seasons, the soil was loamy sandand with the elevation rising from400m to800m. The soil of Baicaoyuan was clay and with theelevation of100m.2. The content of sugars and lactones which were determined by DNS and HPLC showed remarkabledifferences among AMK of same genotype from different habitats.3. The25samples of AMK were comprehensively evaluated by Analysis of Variance, principalcomponent and cluster analysis. Two principal components whose accumulated variance contributionrate was over80.699%were obtained. Based on these principal components,25samples of AMK fromthe different planting areas in Zhejiang were clustered into three groups by within-groups linkagecluster methods. The results show that Pan’an was the best among7habitats, Yuqian and Longquanwere better than others habitats.4. The water extracts of AMK from Tiantai and Yuqian were confirmed effective to diabetes induced byadrenaline or alloxan. And the active substance from AMK is water soluble polysaccharide. However,the hypoglycemic effect of AMK from different habitats was not various. Finally, the research alsofound that water soluble polysaccharide of AMK had a property to lose weight.In the present study, the main environment factors of habitats of AMK have be found, an efficientsystem has be proposed for quality control of AMK and the effect of losing weight by water solublepolysaccharide of AMK has be confirmed. These results formed a foundation for future exploitation anduse of AMK.
