ObjectiveTo study the effects and mechanisms of catechins on experimental atherosclerosis in quails.MethodsTake120male and healthy north Korea quail, then divided them into six groups ran-domly after one week with ordinary feed. Atherosclerosis model in quail was established as group of Catechins (20,40,80mg/Kg), lovastatin (79.5mg/Kg), model and control. Quails in every group were feeded hyperlipoidal feed except the control group. The lipid levels in serum were detected at the end of8th week. The aorta, myocardium and liver were examined histopathologically and so were the level of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and total antioxida-nt capacit (T-AOC) while reduced malondiadehyde (MDA) in serum at the end of8th week.ResultsCompared with model group, the concentration of triglyceride (TG)> total cholesterol (TC^low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) and apolipoprotein B (Apo B) in serum decreased remarkedly (F=5.45~46.86, q=2.00-8.94, P<0.05), the serum apolipoproteinA (Apo A) was increased (q=3.25~4.15, P<0.05) in each dose group with catechins, the serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) was increased (q=2.38-5.10, P<0.05in the middle group with catechins. At the same time, TC and TG in the myocardial and the liver and TG in the aortic wall were reduced (F=3.57~39.39, q=2.47-13.08, P<0.05). Compared with model group, the degree of atherosclerotic lesion in aorta and coronary artery in catechins group was reduced (H=21.69~27.97, q=3.09~10.15, P<0.05). Fatty change of each dose group with catechins lightenned significantly, classification standard of the liver was significantly lower than the model group(H=42.98, q=6.90-10.95), the liver coefficient is less than the model group (F=17.15, q=q=3.00~4.92, P<0.05). The level of the serum SOD, GSH-Px and T-AOC was increased while MDA level was reduced (F=4.01~16.00, q=2.26~10.54, P<0.05).ConclusionCatechins can prevent atherosclerotic lesion probably due to decreasing blood lipid level and antioxidation.
