The Scholars, for its exact, concise language, vivid characters, splendid scenerydescriptions, excellent ironic artistic method, is one of the top ironic novels. Franklyspeaking, The Scholars has the highest artistic value at the point of narrative technique.Xianzhailaoren(闲斋老人)once said “with its rare artistic construct of composition andextraordinary writing method, The Scholars’s brushwork on character portrayal is quiteexcellent”.(闲斋老人,2008)This important and successful description benefits fromthe use of “chun qiu bi fa”.“Chun qiu bi fa” emphasizes on the union and coherencebetween the literary and the logic thought in writing. Such narrative technique uses theexact word and its diction is concise but lucid; its meaning is hidden but profound. Itplays an important role on reflecting the figures’ action and rendering the atmosphere. Ingeneral, it successfully helps to form the novel’s own conspicuous characteristic as LuXun once commented “seemingly it is a long novel, but in fact it shares more featureswith the short ones” in structure,“castigating the errors of the times out of unselfishmotives,” and “sorrow with harmony, elegance with much satire” in the art of irony.(鲁迅,1975:193) At present, for its excellent ironic technique, the study on The Scholarshas been received many concerns and its English version has been studied from manyaspects, however, the translation on “chun qiu bi fa”, maybe, is very few.Up to now, only the couple of Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang coact with finishingtranslating the novel completely. And it is the most perfect and the nearest translatedversion to the original text. With its exact, natural and fluent language, the translatedbook reproduces the original content and theme accurately and conveys its own typicalirony artistic feature faithfully. Undoubtedly, it is the first class translated book.Nevertheless, there is no best but better. The translated book also has its own flaws andthere still exists several places in it which could be improved better. Therefore, takingThe Scholars translated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang as the analysis example, thethesis mainly focuses on analyzing the advantages or disadvantages of translation on“chun qiu bi fa” from five aspects:“Zhi Shu”(直书),“Qu Bi”(曲笔),“Bi Xue”(笔削),“Wei Yan Da Yi”(微言大义), and “Yi Zi Jian Bao Bian”(一字见'贬) under the functional equivalence translation theory. And then the thesis further discusses thestrategies of the translation on “chun qiu bi fa” in order to reproduce the closest naturalequivalence in terms of the vocabulary, sentence, style between the Chinese and westernculture. Therefore, the writer wants to provide a new research approach or a newviewpoint for the translations of Chinese classics through some relative interdisciplinarystudy. The thesis primarily consists of five chapters: chapter one covers a generalliterature review on The Scholars、“chun qiu bi fa” and analyzes the significance of thethesis. Chapter two discusses the developments of functional equivalence, explains thenature of Nida’s equivalence and illustrates some examples in terms of functionalequivalence theory in order to emphasize the significance of functional equivalencetheory in literary translation. Chapter three introduces the theme of The Scholars andillustrates the origin, essence, evolvement and the embodiment of “chun qiu bi fa” inThe Scholars. Chapter four presents the analysis of the translation of “chun qiu bi fa” inThe Scholars translated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang under the functionalequivalence theory, explores the translation method of “chun qiu bi fa” and testifies theeffect of applying the theory of functional equivalence to the translation of “chun qiu bifa”. Chapter five is the conclusion of the thesis and the further suggestions. Shallowlystated as it is, the author tries to provide a new perspective for the translation study ofThe Scholars and offers enlightenment for the translation of “chun qiu bi fa” in literarywork.
