On Wang Zuoliang’s Translation Thoughts From The Perspective Of Intertextuality Theory

The concept of intertextuality was first put forward by French semiologist JuliaKristeva in1966and through continuous diversified development by many theoristson this basis, the theory of intertextuality has been polynary and open, seeking tohighlight the inter-reference, penetration and transformation between texts, that is, theproduction of a text is based on the reference and absorption of the former texts andother texts, and the meaning of the text is not isolated. Instead, it is conceived in themutual relationship among a variety of texts and the whole cultural system.Translation itself is an activity dealing with texts, then the two have reached anagreement on the researching objects; In1990s, the theory of intertextuality wasintroduced into translation research by the English translators and linguists Hatim andMason. The internal relation was found between translation and intertextuality studies,thus changing the former understanding of the relationship among the original text,the author, the translator and the reader as well as broadening the perspective oftranslation studies. Therefore it is inevitably meaningful to study translation from theperspective of intertextuality as a dynamic and pluralistic way of thinking andstrategy.So far the intertextuality theory has been applied to translation in the followingareas: literary translation, practical writing translation, machine translation.Particularly in literary translation studies, many researches from the view ofintertextuality focus on discussing the relationship among the translation subjects,original texts and target texts and reconsidering the translation activity itself. Thetranslation field began to observe every aspect of the translation process from a newperspective for better appreciating translation works and analyze as well as constructthe new theoretical translation systems then to guide translation practice, which is ofgreat significance. Nevertheless, as a new research perspective, its application in thetranslation field is worthy of continuously broadening.As the prominent figure in the foreign language circle in China, Mr. Wang Zuoliang is not only a master of the English literature studies, but also has attainedremarkable achievements in translation theory and practice. His creative translationthoughts and rich translation practice have settled his status in the Chinese translationfield. His translations are characterized by a considerable amount of poems and prosesas well as some fictions and dramas, among which many translations are stillconsidered models till now. Interpreting the translation phenomenon from a stylisticpoint of view and culture to extend the perspective of Chinese translation studies, histranslation thoughts are far-sighted and he forms his own system. His selection oforiginals and translation strategies, and in particular his great concern for translatorsand readers contributed to his unique style of translations. In poem translation practice,he put forward remarkable insights, proposing poets translating poems, source textselection and the interaction between poem translation and poem creation. Havingmade a significant contribution to the Chinese translation theory and practice, Wang’stranslation thoughts greatly deserve further exploration and discussion.This thesis aims to analyze Wang Zuoliang’s translation thoughts from theperspective of intertextuality and find their affinities, for the purpose of a newunderstanding of Wang Zuoliang’s translation thoughts and practice and theintroduction of a new research method. Through the combing and application ofintertextuality theory, it is a big try and supplement on the research perspectives ofWang Zuoliang’s translation, which is expected to enrich the research methods ofWang Zuoliang’s translation thoughts and enhance its value, hoping for a newunderstanding on Wang’s translation thoughts and practices then to analyze othertheories and construct new theories.
