Wang Zuoliang was an educator,an authority on the field of English literature study.He was also an extraordinary translator,linguist,poet,writer,considered as an“encyclopedia scholar”.As an excellent translator,he introduced lots of foreign classics.Except for Burns' poetry,Bacon's essays,Wang Zuoliang translated many poetry from R.S.Thomas,Phillip Larkin,Auden,MacDiarmid and other English modernist poets,even from American modernist poet: Robert Bly and James Wright,which helps Chinese readers to know many new poets.There are seldom researches on Wang's translation of modernist poetry and my thesis would make a analysis of Wang's translation action to modernist poetry.This thesis is unfold form three aspects: at first,chapter one presents Wang's translation activity of Anglo-American modernist poetry in detail,concludes its characteristics and analyzes his modernity in translation.Secondly,this paper analyzes the influence factors of Wang's translation action including context of time and ideology of translator.Wang's translation to Anglo-American modernist poetry is based on the context of modernist poetry and poetry translation in the 1980 s.Wang's recognition to Anglo-American has been updated,which affects his translation action.At last,my thesis discusses that Wang's translation had an impact on his poetry writing.Wang made many innovations in poetry writing,such as blending tattle and literary critic into poetry,fusion of Chinese and western in poetry form.Wang Zuoliang tried to expand the range of poetry all the time and his translation provided materials for his poetry writing.In conclusion,my thesis sorts out and concludes Wang's translation to Anglo-American modernist poetry,analyzes modernist poetry context in 80's and Wang's relationship with modernist poetry,which helps interpret Wang's preference in translation,the reason why he translated modernist poetry,the impact his translation brought to his poetry writing.
