Formulaic sequence has developed for decades, the studies of which have beenmainly conducted from the perspective of corpus linguistics and cognitive psychologyfoundations. Scholars have employed distinct technical terms to describe thephenomenon of FS, among which are lexical phrases, prefabricated chunks, formulaicspeech, idiosyncratic chunks, lexicalized sentence stems, etc.. Related studies havebeen extended to first and second language acquisition and teaching, languageteaching, written and spoken English learning. However, up till recently, there has notreached a unanimous agreement on the definition of FS and no systematic researchtheory and methodology have been developed. In addition, few studies of FS intranslation studies have been detected. Therefore, the study of FS in annual reporttranslation is infused with a pioneering significance. This thesis is conducted from the perspective of cognitive psychologyfoundations, to be precise, memory theory in language use and the dual-mode systemwhich consists of the rule-based system and the exemplar-based system. By means ofcollecting thirty listed companies’ annual reports in both English and Chinese versions, the author employs both qualitative and quantitative methodology to elaborate thenature and possibility of this study and make use of the statistical tool of AntConc bytabbing and indexing to analyze the collected data to make quantifications of the study. The analytical part is carried out mainly from chairman’s statement, corporategovernance report and financial statements to sum up the FS employed and attempt toestablish a model on annual report translation. Major research findings lie in the factthat a great many FSs exist in annual reports in different forms, namely, poly-words,phrasal constraints, institutionalized expressions and sentence builders, threetranslation strategies have been put forward for annual report translation, and atentative model for annual report C-E translation is summarized. Moreover, a detailedexample has been presented to further probe into the employment of FS in annualreport translation and the powerful and significant role it plays. This thesis will offer an insight for the application of FS to translation studies and practice. Furthermore it may pave the way for the application of FS in translationteaching and the tentative model may facilitate performers’ translating process andoffer references for other Chinese companies’ annual report translation.
