Modern China’s advertising rised after the Opium War and entered the stage ofpeak development in the1920s and1930s. The advertising business of Cantondeveloped very rapidly in this period, but various problems about advertisingfollowed. With regards to this, Canton municipal government conducted a wide rangeof governance on outdoor advertising and newspaper’s commercial advertising of thecity from1927to1937. The appearance of outdoor advertising was slightly improvedand the environment of newspaper’s commercial advertising remained poor, becauseundesirable medical advertising and movie advertising were still frequently published.There were many causes that brought about ineffective advertising management workof Canton municipal government.The effect was not only closely related withbackground at that time but also several limitations of government itself. It can revealthe relationship between economic features and political and social features throughthe research on advertising management of Canton municipal government inRepublican China.
