A Study Of The Strategies Of Chinese Translation Of English News: From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the deepening of globalization, news becomes the vital part of informationexchange among different countries. Since English is the most-widely used language inthe world, the quality of Chinese translation of English news will directly affect thecommunication between China and other countries. Therefore it is necessary to make aprofound study of the strategies of Chinese translation of English news.This thesis makes a deep analysis of Chinese translation of English news from theperspective of Nida‘s Functional Equivalence theory.―Content is over the form‖and―Reader‘s response‖are the two most essential concepts in Nida‘s FunctionalEquivalence theory.(FE theory).―Functional equivalence‖is defined as―the degree towhich the receptors of the message in the receptor language respond to it insubstantially the same manner as the receptors in the source language.‖According toNida‘s Functional Equivalence theory, translators not only should grasp the content ofthe source language text and faithfully convey its original meaning, but also have totake the target readers‘response into consideration. As a kind of informative text，themajor purpose of English news is to meet the reader’s needs of information andFunctional Equivalence theory also emphasizes the importance of the information andreader‘s responses, therefore, they have the same orientation so it is feasible to applicateFE theory to study the strategies of Chinese translation of English news.The thesis begins with literature review of Eugene Nida‘s Functional Equivalencetheory, then comes to the brief introduction of English news. In the following part, theemphasis is on how to integrate functional equivalence theory with English newstranslation and the author puts forward several techniques under the guidance of thistheory and discusses how these techniques are put into practice at different levels. In aword, it is concluded that with the guidance of the FE theory, the Chinese translation ofEnglish news could be improved and be more accurate so as to make the English newsmore informative, more communicative and more helpful to Chinese people’sunderstanding of the world.
