Strategies For Translation Of English Political News At Word Level From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

As the basic ideographic unit of English political news, the translation accuracy of English political news at word level directly affects the quality of the whole translation. Starting from analyzing the main characteristics of English political news at word level, this thesis mainly discusses their Functional Equivalence translation strategies with translation examples based on Functional Equivalence Theory. The translations also need to have the corresponding characteristics in view of English political news at word level having the epochal, political and cultural characteristics, objectivity and popularity. Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory holds that translation is not literal equivalence but to achieve functional equivalence between the two languages, and translation should not stick to formal equivalence and emphasizes the responses of both source language reader and target language reader are somewhat equivalent, which have great guide function in the translation practice of English political news at word level. When translating English political news at word level, translators can adopt literal translation, free translation and flexible translation. Translators can adopt literal translation when the structure of source language is almost consistent with that of target language and the original content can be expressed well by translating literally. If not, translators can consider adopting free translation. Sometimes translators need to adopt flexible translation in order to make the target reader better understand the translation. Translators can make the translation of English political news equivalent to the source text to the greatest extent by using these translation strategies.
