Chinese idioms, one kind of idioms that contain rich Chinese culture, are a verycomplicated language in structure and cultural meaning, which has been a difficultterm for foreign students to study and in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language aswell. Foreign students studying in China could catch accurate Chinese languageexpressions if they can know the proper use of Chinese idioms. In recent years, manyresearchers have focused on the study of semantics, grammar, pragmatic errors, lexicography and teaching methods, etc. However, few researchers concern on thespecific guidance of the study on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language orChinese idioms learning rules.Taking Second Language Acquisition Theory and Error Analysis Theory as theguidance, on the basis of idiom ontology research, second language acquisitionresults and predecessor research, this paper, taking Central-Asian foreign studentswho study in universities of Xinjiang Province as targets, studies the level andcurrent situations of using Chinese idioms of Central-Asian foreign students. Byways of text observation, statistical technique and questionnaire, the author collectedcompositions of365articles and questionnaire of68copies from Middle-levelstudents in International Culture Exchange School of Xinjiang Normal University. Asa result, the author summarized some features of the usage of Chinese idioms ofCentral-Asian students. The study shows that among the effective examples of193sentences, theseforeign students can be correct in84sentences, and make errors in109sentences. Intotal, they used142Chinese idioms except repeated used ones. Foreign studentswere easy to make mistakes in writing, semantics, among which, errors happen sooften due to misunderstanding of the semantics. For the questionnaire parts, this paper gave a detailed analysis of different typesof factors which could affect the understanding of Chinese idioms, errors made bydifferent levels of foreign students and the ability to use Chinese idioms. Fromsyntax structure, foreign students paid more attention on the "lack of utterances".Finally, the author summarized idiom categories and influencing factors that foreignstudents were good at by analysis of the right usage of idioms in text observation andquestionnaires. This paper points out that the complexity of idiom itself, negative transfer oftarget language, shortcomings of the text, false teaching ways and learning strategiescould cause error happenings. The author has proposed six suggestions according to error happenings: tofurther strengthen the study of Chinese idioms learning rules, to improve texts andteaching methods; to extend learning ways; to concern on Chinese idiomcommunication and to edit tool books that are available for foreign students.
