The reclamation of the tideland at the south of Hangzhou Gulf has the specialstatus among the history of Chinese reclamation. Depending on the natural and theman-land relationship of Xiaoshan in Qing Dynasty, this article discusses the reasonof the reclaimed tideland of Xiaoshan District, and then try to discuss the way ofthe reclamation and the influence to the economic development. Besides theforeword, this article has four parts:Firstly, he natural and the social background of Xiaoshan reclamation in QingDynasty. This part mainly discusses the reason of the Xiaoshan reclamation,including the natural environment and the man-land relationship. On the one hand,frequent floods made the south watercourse of the Qiantang River silting-up step bystep, and then gave the land reclamation a good chance. In the other hand, the rapidpopulation increase of the Qing Dynasty also brought the need of the land.Secondly, the development of building seawall and the reclamation of coastalland. The technology of building seawall reached a peak in the Qing Dynasty, which provided the convenience to the reclamation of coastal land of Xiaoshan. Besidesthe land reclamation by building the seawall in this period, there were two otherways, which were the reclamation and grazing of natural transformation. By thethree mainly ways of the land reclamation, the area of the land in Xiaoshan had abig increase, and then relieved the pressure of the rapid population increase, asprovided the wide resource.Thirdly, the salt business. At the beginning, the reclaimed tideland was to be thesalt field. Xiaoshan had the natural advantage of the fishing and salt to develop theSalt industry. At that time, Xiaoshan had three typical things, which are the methodof making salt, the marketing management and the salt certificate.Fourthly, the agriculture of the land-reclamation. After studying how to dilutethe Saline-alkali land and how to plough, this part mainly discusses the ways of howto plant crops on the land-reclamation. And then discusses the relationship betweenagriculture of the land-reclamation and the whole economic of Xiaoshan district inQing Dynasty roughly.
