A Comparative Study On Emotional Connotation Marking Between Modern Chinese-English Dictionary And Modern Chinese Dictionary

Emotional connotation is one of the nine components Zhang Zhiyi raised, it is the subject’sfeeling, attitude and evaluation to basic meaning. It reflects the subjective information of basicmeaning about language community’s joy, anger, love, hate, respect, modest, praise and relegate.It has a great role of improving and strengthening the expression function of language in thecommunication process.As the representatives of the monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, Modern ChineseDictionary(fifth edition)and Modern Chinese-English dictionary(new edition) marked theemotional connotation of some of the entries, but due to the different compilation purpose, thetwo exist some differences in the compilations. We collected the whole entries marked theemotional connotation, analyze and compare their marking form, scope of the collection words,marking of the part-of-speech tagging, arrangement of entries, phonetic, definition and usage ofcharacters. Find out the differences between the two and their disadvantages, and then discussthe compilation of dictionaries dictionary standard principle as well as the practical significanceand the practical value.The full text divides into eight chapters:Exordium illuminated the significance of the topic, research status, subject investigated,source of corpus, research methods and research objectives, to understand the overall studysituation.The first chapter is comparison with marking form’s of emotional connotation in ModernChinese-English Dictionary and Modern Chinese Dictionary, classify the two dictionary entrieswith emotional connotation according to four points Zhang Zhiyi raised, and summarize twodictionary’s marking form. Modern Chinese Dictionary used text description mostly, andModern Chinese-English Dictionary used rhetorical terms abbreviation marker, and then tryto analyze the reasons.The second chapter is comparison with scope of the collection words in ModernChinese-English Dictionary and Modern Chinese Dictionary, discover the words with emotionalconnotation are not the same on two dictionaries through exhaustive classification. Find out theirdifferences and analyze the causes, and discuss the general principle of dictionaries. The third chapter is comparison with marking of the part-of-speech tagging in ModernChinese-English Dictionary and Modern Chinese Dictionary, through comparison with the formand scope of part-of-speech tagging about the words with emotional connotation in twodictionaries, illustrate the significance and role of part-of-speech tagging, thereby improve thequality of compiling dictionaries.The fourth chapter is comparison with arrangement of entries in Modern Chinese-EnglishDictionary and Modern Chinese Dictionary, through comparison with arrangement of entriesabout the words with emotional connotation in two dictionaries, find out the similarities anddifferences and similarities, analyze the reasons about their differences, prompt the editor clearthe concept about word, and make the dictionary compilation normative.The fifth chapter is phonetic comparison about Modern Chinese-English Dictionary andModern Chinese Dictionary, find out the two dictionary containing modal with, compared therighteous word entries and multiple word entries with emotional connotation in phoneticsimilarities and differences, and emphasize the positive role of standardized notation fordictionary compilation .The sixth chapter is comparison with definition and usage of characters in ModernChinese-English Dictionary and Modern Chinese Dictionary, through the analysis of definitionand usage of characters with emotional connotation, find out the differences about theirdefinition form, the number of separation of meanings and usage of characters. According tothe principles of dictionary definition, focus on the important role of normative definitionabout the bilingual dictionary .The seventh chapter is principle of dictionary compilation, on the basis of the comparisonand analysis about many aspects in the previous chapters, emphasize four principles about thedictionary compilation, and strive to standardize the compilation of dictionaries.The eighth chapter is practical significance and value about standardizing dictionary,illustrate normative dictionaries play a positive role in improving quality about the dictionaries’compilation, advancing the study of parent language and foreign language, promoting teachingChinese as a foreign language.
