Both The Modern Chinese Dictionary and The Modern Standard Chinese Dictionary are common medium-size Chinese dictionaries. They aim at popularizing Putonghua (普通话) and standardizing the contemporary Chinese language. The two dictionaries mainly collect vocabulary in Putonghua, and partly absorb some dialects, archaisms and loanwords.Though the number of the loanwords in the two dictionaries is limited, which covers a little more than 1 percent, the loanwords take a vital role in Chinese lexicon, so it is important to standardize them. At the same time, some problems do exist in the standardization of the loanwords, which need to be further improved. Therefore this thesis, with the standardization of the dictionaries as the starting point and basing on the frequency of the words used, primarily adopts through statistics and comparison method to study the loanwords in the two dictionaries, which hopes to explore the requirement of the standardization of the dictionary and improve the standardization of the words. This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction, in which the editions of the two dictionaries are introduced briefly, as well as presenting us a study status in quotation at present and pointing out the value on the study of the standardization of dictionaries' s loanwords. The second part definites the nature and scope of the loanwords, and made a preliminary statistics about the amount of words, categories of part of speech and types of semantic in the two dictionaries. In this thesis we point out the styles of the loanwords as following: pure transliterated words, words translated literally plusing freely, words translated literally and freely compatibly, words translated literally and freely by half, words translated imitatedly, loanwords written by means of letters.
