An Application Of The Interpretive Theory Of Translation In Interpreting

As a relatively young discipline of subject, interpreting can trace its root andorigin in translation. In communication and exchanging practice, interpreting plays anundisplacable role with its instantaneity characteristic and the communication effect,which is an important bridge in the process of globalization. However, in a longperiod of time, the theoretical study of interpreting has lagged behind translation, tothe effect that restricts the development of interpreting practice and leads to theuncertainty of the criteria in interpreting.As the first systematic interpreting theory, the interpretive theory of translationwas brought up in connection with the extensive interpreting practice of its founder,Prof. Danica Seleskovitch and Prof. Marianne Lederer, which in turn aims in trainingprofessional interpreters and providing guidelines to interpreting teaching practice. Itis believed that interpreting is interpretive in the interpretive theory of translation, inwhich accuracy is important, but seeking no complete equivalence in the form oflanguage symbols. It sees interpreting act into three phases-the comprehension of themeaning, deverbalization and reformulation (re-expression) of the comprehendedmeaning. Comprehension of the meaning of the original text or discourse is theprerequisite for interpreting in the interpretive theory of translation. Without thecorrect comprehension of the meaning, no effective interpreting could go on. While incomprehension of the meaning, interpreters’ cognitive knowledge, encyclopedicknowledge are required in combination with the specific contextual knowledge.Deverbalization is core concept in the interpretive theory of translation, it is thecognitive and emotional meaning at the comprehension of the original text ordiscourse, and it is the transcending to the original language symbols. Re-expressionis last step in the interpreting process, it is the only and direct link betweeninterpreters and the listeners. Finally with the creative hypothesis of the interpretingtriangular model, the interpretive theory of translation has come into being. At the enlightenment of the embodied philosophy, the interpretive theory oftranslation breaks off the shackle of paradigmatic translation model of mid20thCentury, ushers dynamic psychological analysis and cognitive linguistics in the studymethod of interpreting, finally sets up a set of theoretical system centering on theinterpreting and delivery of meaning to interpret the cognitive process in interpreting,direct the interpreting practice as well as the interpreting training and teaching. Thetheory well explains the nature of interpreting, analyses the influence factors ininterpreting, and put forward the principles and criteria in interpreting, whichenlightens the way for the development of interpreting and interpreting training andteaching. The integration of theory and practice is essence of the interpretive theory oftranslation, which also guarantees the ceaseless perfection and development of theoryitself in interpreting practice.
