Simulated Interpreting Practice Of Premier Li's Speeches On Davos Forum Under The Guidance Of The Interpretive Theory

The development of the economic globalization had rendered more and more frequent diplomatic activities between China and other countries. Under this circumstance, numerous international conferences have been held to discuss and explore the global economic issues, and to promote the international cooperation and interaction in the economic field and Davos Forum is exactly one of them. Today, there exist various kinds of obstacles in the interpreting work of the international conferences. Particularly during the interpreting process,various factors including codes of language of speakers,interpreters and targeted audiences and their different cultural backgrounds have brought plenty of difficulties to the interpreting, or even deterred the delivery of the conference information. Therefore, the main discussion in this report is built on the basis of the simulated consecutive interpreting material- Premier Li's speech on Davos Forum. And the focus of the discussion is about the probable questions during the interpreting process on the international conferences and feasible and constructive strategic interpreting techniques which can be used as reference to the following researches on conference interpreting.The interpretive theory is quite a practical theory among all the current translation theories. It is built on years of interpreting experiences from excellent interpreters and scholars and emphasizes that the interpreter is supposed to focus on comprehending what the speaker tries to deliver, de-verbalize and summarize the speaker's ideas and thoughts to re-express them faithfully and smoothly.This report, under the guidance of the interpretive theory, is constructed on the author's simulated interpreting practice of Premier Li's speeches on Davos Forums the same time the whole interpreting process was recorded. After the interpreting, the recording audio was transferred to text form for further analysis and discussion. Then the author summarized difficulties found in the interpreting process and proposed series of interpreting strategies with reference to the interpretive theory.This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the task description, a brief introduction to the interpreting task including pre-interpreting, interpreting and post-interpreting, and also to the objective of the study. The second one is mainly about the literature review including the interpretation of the interpretive theory, the status quo of the research on conference interpreting and the necessity and feasibility of the application of the interpretive theory in the conference interpreting. And the third chapter specifies the whole interpreting process including preparation before interpreting,questions met during the interpreting and post-interpreting work. In the theoretical basis of the preparation part, the author introduces the triangle model and three levels of translation in the interpretive theory. Then, the fourth part is about the case study including systematic analysis of such difficulties met in the interpreting task as short-term memory, note-taking and re-expression and further discusses specific solutions or interpreting techniques to difficulties mentioned above. And for the short-memory, solutions including shadow exercise, retelling exercise and visualization,outlining and chunking of the information are proposed; for the note-taking, there are vertical layouts, digital interpreting and symbols; for the re-expression, both in lexical level and syntactical level, strategies including generalization of culture-loaded words,abbreviations for economic terms, division of long sentences and supplement of information are suggested. Finally, the last part summarizes all aspects of the whole paper the same time concludes that the core idea of the interpretive theory is de-verbalization which not only can be applied in discussion of interpreting strategies but provides guidance for the short-memory, for example, retelling exercise, visualization,outlining and chunking of information. And last, the author makes specific analysis on limitations and shortcomings of the report and suggests further improvement.
