Nowadays, our culture becomes more prosperous. The music, as avery significant field in the culture, also develops continuously. The pastfew years have witnessed a boom in both western music and the folkmusic, for the reason that the musicians all over the world pursue totallydifferent and a wide range of music styles. But unfortunately, the folkmusic in China develops less rapidly, compared with western musicwhich was introduced later in China. The audience are in pursuit of freshsound and rebellious style. However these elements are hardly embodiedin folk music.The majority works of folk music still remain the samestyles handed down for hundreds of years, only a small part of composerscompose distinctively. In author’s view, the music should not only inheritthe tradition, but also be carried forward. In this paper, through theoverview about music development of Gershwin’ era and analysis of hiswork "An American in Paris", we can realize that how Gershwin blendedthe jazz with serious music and how he integrated the two unrelatedmusic styles with American folk music. Finally, depending on theanalysis of Gershwin’s creative music style, we come up with someconstructive reflections about Chinese folk music and the development of creating folk music.
