Study Of Quantifier In Collected Works Of Lao She

As one of the most important composition of Chinese language, quantifier has a history of thousands of years. In the field of literature, however, the study on quantifier has begun very late so that the progress is off and on. Although the development of quantifier is figured out more and more clear, little is known about quantifiers used in the alternate period between modern and contemporary times. Lao She is the unique author who was born in an ordinary family during this period. His works deserve our careful reading and are widely used in textbooks for middle and primary schools, owing to its standard use of specification for modern literature. Simultaneously, the features of language used in the area of Beijing can also be abstracted out from Lao’s works.Therefore, this study analyzes the use of quantifier in Lao’s works published by The People’s Literature Publishing House between November,1980and May,1991. All the original uses of various quantifiers are searched and sorted out, followed by analysis and discussion from the view of grammar and use of the contemporary quantifier. In addition, combined with the background of language and education, application of quantifiers in Lao’s works is compared with that in other works at both same and other periods. As a result, the characterization for quantifier use in Lao’s works is concluded. This study should supply significant references for both study and use of quantifiers.
