With the rapid economic and social development of China, more and moreinternational conferences are being held in mainland China. Cross-culturalcommunication is becoming more and more frequent here. Thus interpreters are in agreater demand. And since more and more people are getting better educated, they arebecoming keener to cultural elements in cross-cultural communication. Thusinterpreters are being held even more accountable for the conveyance of uniquecultural elements. That is to say, people are expecting more from interpreters. Theyare not just supposed to interpret linguistic information, more importantly, they aresupposed to interpret cultural information. In cross-cultural communication, due todifferent cultural background of people engaged, barriers would emerge here andthere, among which images/imagery would be considered an outstanding one whichdeserves special attention from interpreters. To faithfully convey the implied meaning of images/imagery so that audiencecould fully appreciate what is being said, it is highly necessary for interpreters toenhance their cultural awareness, among other things. Also, practical coping tacticsare highly valued that are of great significance to the success of field interpreting.Based on schema theory, this paper tries to probe into the significance ofaccurate conveyance of images/imagery in field interpretation and how to handlethem in ways that can facilitate interpreters’ field work. This paper falls into fivechapters. The first chapter is Introduction. The second chapter is Literature Review. The third chapter is a brief introduction to the relationship between schema theory andinterpreting as well as interpreters.
