This report aims at concluding challenges an interpreter may encounter with in interpretation and proposing coping tactics through a case analysis on a consecutive interpreting. The task was completed by the author on March 25th,2017 when delegates from Seattle paid a visit to Centralcon Group,Shenzhen.During the meeting,an introduction of Centralcon Group was made and both parties were seeking to lay foundation for the communications and cooperation in the future.Taking Gile's Effort Model as analytical framework and based on the author's whole interpreting process, six challenges are concluded as follows:the unclear delivery of the speaker, unfamiliar expressions to the interpreter, high information density, unclear note-taking,reorganization of the logical structure and incompetency of language ability.Obstacles will be brought in the listening and analysis if the speaker cannot deliver himself or herself clearly or the interpreter isn't familiar with professional terms.High information density and unclear note-taking will make it difficult in memorizing. An interpreter cannot deliver fluently if the logical structure of the original language is poor or his or her language ability is incompetent.Three coping tactics are mentioned in the report, namely addition, generalization and reformulation.Addition is adopted to provide extra information in order to narrow the information gap between 2 parties.Generalization is used when listing many nouns or noun phrases.Reformulation is the reorganization of the messages and this will better convey the meanings of the speaker.
