Liu Bingzhong (1216-1274), a celebrated official at the beginning of the YuanDynasty, recommend the virtuous and the able, dissuaded the king from killing and madeevery effort to do what a Confucian scholar can do. Having withdrawn from society, he livedin Wu’an Mountain as a Taoist, and then studied Buddhism from Buddhist Xu Zhao. Thenorth academic thoughts between the Jin Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty were mainly inheritedfrom the Northern Song Dynasty scholars, especially the Shao Xue and Su Xue. Bingzhong"fully knew about I Ching, image-number, Shao’s Huangji ". Quanzhen Taoism, a newlyarisen Taoism in Jin Dynasty, reached its heyday at the beginning of Yuan Dynasty. ThoughBingzhong had followed Taoism for a short period, he always adhered to the doctrine ofQuanzhen Taoism and principles of self-cultivation. He, along with Buddhist Hai Yun, wentnorth to pay a formal visit to Kublai, and he did not resume secular life until1264. The longperiod Buddhist experiences made him deeply influenced by the thought “following thedestiny†of the Buddhism.As a combination of the three religions in Liu Bingzhong’s ideology, its futures are asfollows: He participated in politics as a Buddhist, and in according to the Taoist and Buddhistthought “moral management†and the traditional confusion thought “transforming remoteareas with central Chinaâ€, he made Kublai adopt “Han’s law†and “Han’s governanceâ€. Hewas indifferent to fame and wealth, which was fully reflected in his poetry. The threetraditional cultures, Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, were perfectly combined in LiuBingzhong’s thoughts. In Funeral Oration, Yao Shu behold that Bingzhong ‘chisel threerooms and combine them as a whole’, which is pertinent.Liu Bingzhong’s thoughts about the combination of three religions are penetrated in hispoetry and poetic theory. First, this paper analyses his thoughts about the combination ofthree religions, which is discussed with the historical background and the contents of threereligions. Second, this paper explained the representation of three religions in the implicationof poetry: the thoughts of state administration and saving the nation, the consciousness of adhering to Buddhism and Taoism and being indifferent to fame and wealth, the complex ofseclusion and self-adjustment. Third, this paper analyzed Liu Bingzhong’s poetic theory.Based on the former study fruits and taken the influence of the thoughts of three religions intoconsideration, this paper put forward some new viewpoints. |
